Did you ever pull a muscle from performing a physical activity or even just simple chores like sweeping? I know I have. My remedies include stretching the muscle out until the pain goes away or ice and heat approach. There will be times where spasms (twitches) occur. The muscle just contracts or twitches for minutes giving me some sharp pain. Then there are those instances of severe pain as if someone was jabbing at you with a sharp object. For the more extreme pain one can use Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine) to help with pulled muscles and pain. Flexeril is a well-studied muscle relaxer for skeletal muscle spasms.
Flexeril Side Effects
The side effects of Flexeril include drowsiness, dizziness, trouble urinating, dry mouth, increased agitation and an increase in heart rate in some cases. This medication is most effective for the first two weeks of treatment. After that time frame, doctors will usually recommend ending the prescription treatment. It is highly discouraged to take this medication with MAO inhibitors such as linezolid since the side effects could be lethal.
Now the tricky part comes when you mix Flexeril and alcohol, street drugs such as ecstasy or tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline. Keep in mind that both are sedatives and relax you so don’t operate heavy machinery nor drive for that matter. You can sort of say that a Flexeril high is created which can lead to a Flexeril overdose. Yes, you can die from taking too many pills. If you do overdose from it, the course of treatment is receiving a large volume gastric lavage followed by activated charcoal into your stomach.
Flexeril Dosage and Use
There are several doses that are recommended for patients: Flexeril 5mg and Flexeril 10mg. Flexeril 10 mg is the highest dosage strength prescribed considering that you have to take it three times a day. As an added bonus, the price of generic Flexeril is cheaper than most other muscle relaxers. Considering that insurances today are careful about what medications are covered.
In terms of Flexeril uses to treat other conditions, it has been known to help treat fibromyalgia (musculoskeletal pain), Lupus, insomnia, rheumatoid arthritis and restless leg syndrome. As always consult your doctor. Keep in mind that these are off-label uses which are probably not approved by the FDA but treat similar symptoms.
